What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they allow your dentist to mount replacement teeth onto them. Because implants fuse to your jawbone, they provide stable support for artificial teeth and don't come loose like dentures can.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant process is typically performed in stages and requires several months to complete:

Initial Consultation

During your initial consultation at Krishna Multispeciality Dental Clinic, our dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth, take X-rays, and discuss your treatment options. We'll also review your medical history to ensure you're a good candidate for dental implants.

Implant Placement Surgery

The dental implant is surgically placed into your jawbone. After the surgery, a healing period of several months allows the implant to integrate with your bone (osseointegration).

Abutment Placement

Once the implant has bonded with the jawbone, an abutment is attached to the implant. The abutment is the piece where the crown will eventually attach.

Crown Placement

After your gums heal, impressions of your teeth and mouth are made to custom create your artificial tooth (crown). The crown is then attached to the abutment.

Caring for Your Dental Implants

Caring for dental implants is similar to caring for your natural teeth:

• Practice good oral hygiene by brushing twice a day and flossing once daily
• Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and professional cleanings
• Avoid hard foods that can damage the crown
• Quit smoking to promote healing and long-term success of the implant

Ideal candidates for dental implants are people who:

• Have one or more missing teeth
• Have a jawbone that has reached full growth
• Have adequate bone to secure the implants or able to have a bone graft
• Have healthy gum tissues free from periodontal disease
• Don't have health conditions that will affect bone healing
• Are unable or unwilling to wear dentures
• Are willing to commit several months to the process
